BossUPGIRL Co.: What do you like most about what you do? What do you like the least?
Melanese: I love that I play a small role in ensuring our National Guard Soldiers have adequate buildings for training and completing their mission of defending this Country abroad and here at home. I love that I get to meet and train the great men and women of the National Guard. The travel is bitter sweet. I have been given the opportunity to see almost all the 54 states and territories. My travel is usually a complete week (travel time and training time) and I’m away from my family missing birthdays, milestones, anniversaries, award ceremonies, etc. Mommy guilt is real. My least favorite aspect of my job is being a government contractor. Once a contract is complete, there is no guarantee that I will be employed by the next company that wins the new contract. It can cause some anxiety and uncertainty. However, I’ve learned to roll with the punches.
BossUPGIRL Co.: #Relationship Goals – As a business professional that travels a lot, how do you maintain a healthy marriage?
Melanese: I have the best husband in the world that supports me in every endeavor I pursue. He wants to see me at my best because he knows if I’m at my best it is a win for him, our marriage and our family. Communication is a must. He cannot read my mind, nor can I read his mind. We are both clear about our needs and expectations (time, assistance, money, meals, everything). We find time to laugh……a lot. We find a way to have date night as often as possible. It’s important to remind ourselves why we first fell in love and that we really like each other’s company.
BossUPGIRL Co.: What is your glass ceiling or ultimate career goal?
Melanese: I have so many goals for myself. I come up with new ideas constantly. I just need to start executing these ideas. My ultimate goal is to own a corporate training company. I also want to write books, operate a food truck and create adult coloring books. I know….. all over the place. However, I’m passionate about each of these goals.
BossUPGIRL Co.: With a husband, busy career, and raising three school age kids with very active schedules, how do you create a work/life balance and what do you do for “me” time or to relax?
Melanese: I really try not to bring work home. I leave work at work. Of course, there are certain times when deadlines demand more hours than a normal work week. I try to make it the exception not the rule. I love to read, listen to music and participate in water aerobics to relax. My boys are in fall and spring sports, but I find time to do things I enjoy while I shuttle them to/from practices and games. The Audible app (audiobooks) is my favorite app because it lets me listen to books while I complete household chores, commute to work or wait at the doctor’s office or in a grocery store line.
Please Provide Tips/Advice for the questions as stated below:
BossUPGIRL Co.: What Interview tips would you give to new professionals entering the workforce to help them land their ideal job?
Melanese: Be yourself. Most people come into an interview with a preconceived notion of what they believe the company is searching for. I’ve found when I walk in just focused on presenting the best of me, it worked out the best. Someone/company wants you!! Be open that the company maybe in another state or even another field. Don’t limit yourself.
BossUPGIRL Co.: What advice would you give to those looking to climb the corporate ladder or take their career to the next level?
Melanese: Look to make yourself invaluable. Look for ways you can improve processes and/or functions that add value to your company.
BossUPGIRL Co.: What tips would you give business professionals to avoid burnout and stay motivated?
Melanese: Once you become unmotivated it is either time to move on to another opportunity or revisit why you previously enjoyed your job or career. If you no longer have a love or passion for your current position begin to look for another opportunity that better aligns with your passion and love. Encourage yourself to step outside your comfort zone.
